A Mickey Mouse Organization
The Devils were the Kansas City Scouts, and then the Colorado Rockies before moving to New Jersey. In the eighties they were a truly terrible franchise. Under the leadership of Lou Lamoriello, savvy personnel moves, and a fortitious decision to remove green from the uniforms, play soon improved and they remain a top franchise to this day. Their high level of success in the nineties is commonly attributed to the the trap.
The trap!?!?!?
Ruining hockey.
See: Minnesota Wild
Actually, the Devils have not ran the trap for a while. They just happen to have one of the best goalies in the league in Martin Brodeur, and actually bother to play defense.
Miscellaneous
While the fanbase is not as large as the New York Rangers, the Devils have attracted a sizeable fanbase and have devastated the Ranger fanbase numbers in New Jersey, particularly among younger demographics. Bitter resentment over the Devils' incredible recent success as compared to the Rangers' abject failure has led to a rivalry between the teams. A rivalry also exists with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Face Of The Franchise
Martin Brodeur, who has been with the team since the Christmas uniform days.
His accomplishments include:
- passing Patrick Roy as the all-time wins leader, even if the record has been cheapened with the equivalent of a season's worth of shootout victories by Brodeur.
- one of two goalies to have over 100 career shutouts. Blame the trap.
- nailing his wife's sister-in-law, earning himself the nickname "Uncle Daddy"
- a $500,000/yr alimony payment until 2020 for his play off the ice.
