Grimsby Town Football Club

Grimsby Town FC (Nicknamed the Mariners (Yeah, even before the stupid baseball team existed)) is a football club that plays football in the English League Two. They were founded in 1878. They play their home matches at Blundell Park which is in Cleethorpes. They are the only team in Britain which plays in a different town to that in their name. Their supporters are notable because they only sing when they're fishing.

History

A bunch of failures who find new ways to fail.

They were pretty good in the 98-99 season though, visiting the old Wembley Stadium twice and finishing with a 100% record. They beat AFC Bournemouth in the Auto Windowscreens shield and Northampton in the Division Two (Now League One) playoff final.

Notable failure Graham Taylor used to play for them.

Bill Shankly was their manager for two years in the 1950s. He was less of a failure.

Beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Worthington Cup a couple of years ago.

The season started well with Grimsby crusing to the top of the league and beating Championship team Derby County 1-0 thanks to a Gary Jones rocket in the League Cup. In the second round they beat Premiership Team Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 from a dramatic last minute volley from outside the area by John-Paul Kamudimba Kalala. It was fucking awesome.

Grimsby were crusing along in the top three promotion spots for nearly the whole season until they had a bad run at the end. This cumulated in conceding a last minute equaliser in the final game of the season against already promoted Northampton. Almost simultaneously, Oxford United conceded a goal to Leyton Orient which meant that Grimsby fell out of 3rd place and into the playoffs.

In the first round of the playoffs they obliterated local rivals Lincoln City over two legs. The first game at Sincil Bank finished 1-0 to Grimsby with top scorer Gary Jones scoring from just outside the 6 yard box before half time. In the second leg Grimsby won 2-1 thanks to tap in by former Lincoln player Ben Futcher and a Gary Jones header.

The victory over Lincoln led the Mariners to the playoff final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Here they played Cheltenham Town FC who they had already beaten twice in the regular season. Grimsby, who were the pre match favourites, played rubbish and lost 1-0 thanks to a Steve Guinan strike which wasn't very good. It also made Gaemblor very sad since Wales is a long way away from Grimsby and his teams never fucking win.
